Studying in the Syriac Language and Literature Undergraduate Program offers you the opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge of a rare and precious language. In this context, my first recommendation is to recognize that learning Syriac requires a lot of time and patience and to stay motivated throughout the process. The complexity of the language and its ancient origins can make the learning process challenging, which is why regular practice and developing habits of continuous learning are so important for language learning.
One of the challenges of the program is the need to correctly interpret and analyze Syriac texts due to their diversity and richness. When working with these texts, students need to understand the historical and cultural contexts and analyze them with these contexts in mind. Therefore, students are encouraged to read widely outside the classroom and to learn more about Syriac language and literature. Utilizing a variety of sources and considering different perspectives when conducting research increases their knowledge and develops their critical thinking skills.
Another important recommendation is for Syriac Language and Literature program students to develop communication and collaboration skills. Communicating effectively with professors, peers and language experts during academic studies enriches the learning process and opens the doors to a wider academic network. Although the study of language and literature often requires individual effort, the exchange of ideas and collaboration can bring new perspectives, especially when working on complex texts and topics.
Finally, I recommend that students enrolled or considering enrolling in this program be proactive in sharing the knowledge they have learned and putting it to practical use. Activities such as attending conferences, organizing seminars or doing translation work help students to consolidate their knowledge and contribute to the wider recognition of the Syriac language and culture. Such activities also provide students with valuable professional experience and empower them in terms of career opportunities. In these ways, students support not only their own academic and professional development, but also the efforts to preserve and promote Syriac language and literature.
