The university was formed by merging the colleges and faculties of İnönü University, Gaziantep University and Harran University within the borders of Adıyaman province under a single roof. Since its establishment, ADYU has been conducting scientific studies and research aimed at contributing to regional and national development.

The university carries out its educational activities on four different campuses: Central Campus, Kâhta Campus, Besni Campus and Gölbaşı Campus. These campuses cover a total area of 2 million 287 thousand square meters. ADYU's academic structure consists of 13 faculties, 1 state conservatory, 3 colleges, 5 vocational schools, 3 institutes and more than 20 research centers. ADYU adopts a student-oriented education approach and offers students a wide range of social opportunities. Sports facilities, social facilities and cultural activities on campuses contribute to students' personal development as well as their academic lives. The university also offers various scholarship opportunities to its students. These scholarships are given to successful and needy students to provide financial support.

The vision of Adıyaman University is to be a university that contributes to regional and national development, produces science and technology, and educates innovative and entrepreneurial individuals. Its mission is to serve the society through scientific research and education and training activities, to support sustainable development and to ensure the individual development of students at the highest level.

One of the strengths of ADYU is the importance it attaches to research projects. In addition, the scientific journals published by ADYU have a respected position in the academic world.
