The climate of Agri has the characteristics of a typical continental climate, which means that temperature differences vary greatly between seasons and daily periods. Summers are hot and dry, while winters are cold and snowy. Spring and autumn often appear as short-lived transitional seasons.
During the summer months, July and August, temperatures can often reach up to 30°C. Although these temperatures are quite high during the day, they drop significantly at night, which usually means cool and comfortable nights. During the winter months, especially in January and February, temperatures can drop as low as 20°C below zero. This cold weather leads to increased snow depth and long-lasting snow cover at high altitudes, such as Mount Ararat. While this creates ideal conditions for winter sports, it can make daily life and transportation difficult.
Winds usually blow from the north and northeast, which increases the impact of cold waves in winter. In summer, the winds, which usually blow from the north, can alleviate the hot weather conditions to some extent. This effect of the wind is particularly noticeable in open areas and at higher elevations.
Humidity is generally low in Agri. This low humidity makes the hot weather conditions more bearable during the summer months, but in winter the cold air feels sharper and freezing. Precipitation occurs mainly in the spring and fall months. Snowmelt and rain in the spring provide important water sources for agricultural activities. However, much of the rainfall is short-lived and localized, which can make management of water resources difficult.
These climatic characteristics of Agri greatly affect the lifestyle and economic activities of the local population. While agriculture and animal husbandry activities are organized according to seasonal conditions, the need for heating in winter and additional measures for transportation can increase the cost of living. Especially for those living in remote and rural areas, stocking up on supplies and fuel during the winter months is an important life strategy.
