Climate of Province Kastamonu

Kastamonu's climate has characteristics that vary according to the seasons due to the influence of the Black Sea and its geographical location. While a mild Black Sea climate prevails in the coastal areas, a more continental climate comes to the fore as the altitude increases towards the interior. In these mountainous and inland areas, winters are colder and snowy and summers are cool. On the coast, winters are mild and rainy and summers are humid and cool.

Temperature values vary greatly according to the seasons. In the winter months, temperatures in the interior can drop below zero and snowfall is quite common. In the coastal areas, winter temperatures are milder and there is usually no frost. In summer, temperatures in the interior vary between 20-25°C, while in coastal areas they are usually between 18-23°C. The spring and fall seasons are cool and rainy, with temperatures generally ranging between 10-15°C.

Winds, especially the north winds blowing from the Black Sea, affect both temperature and humidity levels. North winds bring coolness during the summer months, while cold air reaches the interior during the winter months. Throughout the year, wind speed and direction vary depending on the topography of the region.

The amount of precipitation varies throughout the year and regionally. While the average annual precipitation varies between 400-600 mm throughout Kastamonu, this amount is higher in coastal areas. Precipitation is usually concentrated in the fall and winter seasons. In the summer months, short-term and heavy rainfall is usually observed.

Kastamonu's climate has important effects on daily life. Agriculture and animal husbandry activities are organized depending on climatic conditions. For example, cold winters in the interior can make it difficult to grow some agricultural products, while the mild climate of the Black Sea allows for a wider variety of crops. In addition, cold and snowy winters impose additional burdens, especially in areas such as transportation and heating. In summer, the cool and humid weather makes the region attractive for tourism, but the high humidity can cause some health problems.
