The Bachelor of International Relations offers students a broad conceptual knowledge and practical skill set, but this also comes with its own unique challenges. Therefore, it is important for students to adopt a proactive and systematic approach in order to succeed. The multidisciplinary nature of the program, which includes courses from different fields such as political science, law, economics and history, enables students to acquire a wide range of knowledge. This requires students to make connections between different disciplines and develop an integrated understanding. Therefore, my suggestion to students is to take extra time to understand the relationships between the courses and think about how they can link the subjects together.
The high level of language proficiency required to succeed in international relations can be both an opportunity and a challenge for students. Learning additional languages in addition to English increases the capacity to communicate in the international arena. Students are advised not to limit language learning to classroom work, but to seek out social and professional settings in which to practice the language. It is also useful to follow the media in a foreign language and create opportunities to develop language skills in a natural way.
The intensive and demanding curriculum of the program requires a high level of independent study and discipline from students. Time management is critical in this context and students need to balance their academic obligations, social activities and personal time. Making an effective study plan, setting priorities and consistently sticking to this plan will help overcome the challenges of the program.
Cultural sensitivity and a global perspective is one of the keys to success in international relations. Students are encouraged to participate in a variety of cultural activities in order to understand different cultural perspectives and to shape their own views in the light of these perspectives. Such activities deepen students' cultural understanding and give them the ability to be more effective in an international environment.
Finally, networking is very important for international relations students. Expanding their professional networks will enhance their career opportunities and provide the possibility to connect with people from different cultural and professional backgrounds. Students are encouraged to attend conferences, seminars and meet professionals in their field starting during their university years. These networks can play a critical role in shaping career paths after graduation.
