Life, Traditions and Customs in Ardahan Province

Ardahan, as one of the coldest regions of Turkey, has a unique way of life. The long and harsh winters affect many aspects of daily life and shape the traditional lifestyles of the region. These cold climatic conditions have led the people of Ardahan to develop unique solutions in areas such as home-building techniques, food storage methods and social activities.

Houses are usually built using cold-resistant materials and the large courtyards are specially designed to protect from the snow during the winter months. The food culture has also adapted to the climatic conditions. Foods that can be stored for a long time such as cheese varieties, pickles and roasts prepared especially for consumption in the winter months have an important place in Ardahan cuisine. In addition, "goose meat", one of the dishes unique to the region, is a food that is frequently consumed especially in winter months.

Social life is concentrated indoors, especially during the winter months. Long winter nights are a time for the community to gather together, tell stories, and play and sing traditional music. Local music and dances are important events that bring community members together, especially during weddings and holidays.

Traditional handicrafts are an important part of Ardahan's cultural identity. Especially hand-woven rugs and carpets are valuable both for use and as ornaments. These handicrafts are usually practiced by women and passing them on to younger generations plays a major role in preserving cultural heritage.

Religious and national holidays are celebrated with great enthusiasm in Ardahan. People are guests in each other's homes, special foods are prepared and collective prayers are organized during Ramadan and Kurban holidays. Such events show that the people of Ardahan are close-knit and attach great importance to their traditions.

Despite the difficulties of living in these harsh climatic conditions, the people of Ardahan have accepted this situation and organized their daily lives in accordance with these conditions. The community spirit enables them to support each other in difficult times and reinforces Ardahan's cultural richness and social resilience.
