Iğdır is a small but demographically diverse province in eastern Turkey. According to the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK), the population of the province is approximately 200 thousand. Most of this population lives in the center of Iğdır. The population of Iğdır has a young population and a significant portion of the population consists of young people and children.
The demographic structure of Igdir is rich in ethnic diversity. The main ethnic groups living in the province are Turks, Kurds and Azerbaijani Turks. Each group plays an important role in the cultural and social life of the province. Kurds and Azerbaijani Turks have had a significant impact on the history and development of the province. Moreover, this diversity enriches the social fabric of the province and leads to a multilingual society. While Turkish is the official language, Kurdish and Azerbaijani are also frequently used in daily life.
The level of education is slightly below the average of Turkey in general. Educational opportunities in the province are improving and there are schools supported by the state and private sector. However, the lack of educational infrastructure in rural areas causes some social and economic difficulties. This situation encourages migration to urban centers or other large cities in search of better education and job opportunities, especially among the young population.
The demographic structure of Igdir has both positive and negative impacts on the development of the province. While ethnic diversity fosters cultural richness and a culture of coexistence, limited education and job opportunities can lead to migration of the young population, which can slow down the socio-economic development of the province. However, Iğdır has a rich potential for cultural interactions and inter-community dialog, which can be an important resource for the long-term development of the province.
