Lokman Hekim University English Preparatory Education

Program Objectives

The English Preparatory Program at Lokman Hekim University aims to enhance the English language skills and knowledge required by students in their academic lives and after graduation. It is designed for students enrolled in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy or those who wish to voluntarily take language education.

Program Structure

The English Preparatory Program is aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is conducted across four levels (A1, A2, B1, B1+, B2, B2+). Each level consists of 8-week modules. Students are evaluated through exams at the end of each module. The normal duration of the program is one academic year, with a maximum duration of two academic years.

Attendance Requirement

Attendance is mandatory, and students must attend at least 80% of the classes in their respective levels. Total absenteeism is calculated based on this percentage, and exceeding the specified limits will result in failure.

Assessment and Success Criteria

Students' success is determined by achieving a minimum score of 65 out of 100. The success score is calculated through mid-term exams, short exams, level completion exams, project work, online assignments, and instructor assessments. Students placed in levels A1, A2, and B1 advance to the next level if they successfully complete their current level.

Placement and Exemption Exams

At the beginning of the academic year, students take the Placement Test (STS). Those who score 65 and above qualify for the English Proficiency Exam (LHU-EPE), which consists of two sessions assessing reading, listening, writing, and speaking skills. Students scoring 65 and above start their academic programs directly.

Exemption Criteria

Students are exempt from the proficiency exam if they have completed their secondary education in a country where English is the native language or have obtained the required scores in internationally recognized exams (TOEFL, PTE, FCE, CAE, CPE) or national exams (YDS/YÖKDİL). These exams must have been taken within the last two years.

Success Measures and Transition Process

In the preparatory program, students who achieve an average score of 80 and above over four modules and do not score below 70 in any module are exempt from the proficiency exam, successfully completing the preparatory education. The English Preparatory Program at Lokman Hekim University offers a comprehensive and structured education to enhance students' language proficiency, ensuring their success in academic and professional life. The program also enables students to learn professional terminology, allowing them to communicate more effectively in their respective fields.
